Hi Aman,

There are a couple of reasons I never went with the map download method. 
Firstif I exclusively used Wayfinder in Toronto I would most likely go the 
map download method, but I do travel around the province a bit, and I don't 
feel like managing and downloading a bunch of maps.  Second, Neil will 
probably say I'm being a little over cautious, but I would always worry that 
I might go out  of the area that my downloaded maps cover and then Wayfinder 
takes over and downloads the missing data. As you say, five cents a kilobyte 
adds up pretty quickly.

Hmm.  I wonder if there is a way to tell Wayfinder to only use the 
downloaded maps, and if required, just ask you if you want to download 
additional maps and POI's.  I should look into this.

Thank you very much, Neil and David. That's most helpful. I had kept reading
on the web that WF required 150-300 KB per hour. That can chew through the
tiny amounts of data available to us in this country, at least on most
providers, very quickly. I appreciate the correction and, indeed, have an
E65 and a GPS receiver here the only reason I haven't tested with is that I
had dire visions of my next phone bill having to be delivered by UPS in a
crate.
One clarification, though, if I may ask it. Neil said

If I may ask, then, what am I downloading in the 5-10 KB for guide
view and the 30-50 KB for the view with POIs? If I already have the POIs and
the map data, what is that data I'm downloading and can it be dispensed
with? The reason I ask is that as it stands, I have to pay around $60 a year
to maintain my GPS access if I were to choose the $5 plan David uses. If I
only had to pay for the fact that WF was checking its licensing, that would
only be 1 kilobyte per session, and thus usable on a pay as you go plan, on
which kilobytes are 3-5 cents each. On a pay as you go plan, you would be
spending $1.50 per hour on the 50 KB view and around 30 cents on the guide
view. Though that isn't much, multiply it by 30 days or even by 60 to get a
service used twice a day and you obviously might as well switch to a monthly
plan. Is the 5-10 KB for guide view the best we can do?

Only 2 - 3 MB per month as follows:

The typical journey uses 5 - 10 kbps per hour of use, this is when only
using the Guide View, which is all I use I should point out, a user wanting
more heavy info like POI's on route etc will use more like 50 or so kb per
hour.

But if you now just do the math. There are 20 50kbps one hour journeys in a
1Mb unit. So that's a lot of use even at the higher end.

But now if you like I only use the guide view, which will get you from where
you are to where you want to go step by step then there is 100 hours at
10kbps per hour... That's a lot of walking.

Yes you can download maps for a given area which is what I just recommended,
however WFA also checks your licence as it loads, each time, although this
is only about .003kb according to my data use.

The maps that you can download include all POI data that is available.

I'm surprised it's so low. However, do you mean 2-3 megabytes a
month, a day, a trip, or some other measure? Finally, is there any way at
all to eliminate all data usage for WFA? I mean, even if you have, say, a 4
or 8 gig card, would you be able to download all the maps/POIs/whatever
other information it needs for a specific area and not use the network at
all? I have asked this of WF themselves but have not received a response.

WFA can have very little GPRS data use, especially if you install the maps
for the area to which you live and those you travel within and around.

In any event most typical users only use roughly 2 - 3 megabytes. Which
shouldn't cost to much with most cell providers.

Hello,

I am in Peterborough, Ontario Canada.I don't care what provider I am with.
Currently with Bell but on pay as you go.I am wondering about the Sendero
GPS coming out with cell. The wayfinder I don't think is practical where I
live because of the monthly expenses that would be necessary to support GPS.

I am afraid I am not very technical.

Any suggestions appreciated.
