Hi Frank, yes I think I first posted here about this service in around
August last year. Truphone works very well with either screen reader.
Generally call quality is so good that it's impossible to tell
you'reusing
VOIP. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Truphone is in essence a "mobile" network service, without its own 
mobile network! This service has engendered some "pushback" from the 
incumbent mobile service providers in the U.K. which pushback is

It looks like the way this service works is that, in the US and the UK 
at least (which are among the most price competitive of all the 
countries where mobile services are offered), the user signs up for the 
service and then:

1. gets a Truphone telephone number from the telephone numbering 
plan used in the country where the user is located. In essence, Truphone

is not just a wireless network provider but a "no wireless network of 
its own" network
provider in these two countries with the right, nonetheless, to 
assign such numbers to customers which have been allocated/obtained from

the numbering plan administrator in the users "home" country.

2. installs a Truphone applet on their handset

3. calls are made using VOIP over either 802.11 (when the handset is 
connected to an 802.11 hotspot) or over 3g (e.g. HSDPA) when the handset

is connected to the users mobile service provider (e.g. TMobile or ATT 
in the US)

4. The truphone service maintains "state" information to keep track 
of where each handset is currently connected ( an 802.11 WIFI net or a 
3g network) and what is its IP address, if it is connected at all. By 
this means, the user can receive incoming calls to their 
telephone number.

Initially, the only handsets that are supported with this service are a 
subset of the Nokia handsets (presumably ones that support both 802.11 
and 3g and which allow the installation of software applets) but, 
according to the Truphone www site, other handsets will be supported in 
the future.

If my interpretation of the way this service operates is correct, then 
the service should also be feasible with a dual radio (cdma/evdo + 
802.11) handset that works on one of the CDMA/EVDO networks in the U.S 
such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint, or Alltel.

This service is not much different from using Skype on your 3G or EVDO 
mobile phone with SkypeIn and Skypeout except that Truphone is designed 
using industry standard protocols versus the private/unpublished/secret 
ones that Skype uses.

For now this is very much a niche service since most mobile handsets do 
not support 802.11 nor allow the installation of additional software. 
But of course that is changing as we move forward in time.
